We’re licensed marriage and family therapists and trauma experts with over 30 years of combined experience. We’ve seen time and time again how people have tried to will themselves to be happy, muscle through it, and have ended up even worse off than when they began. We’ve noticed that people have experienced deep pain, whether it’s others who have hurt them or situations and the world just beating them down, and often they have turned that into an internal dialogue where they are mean...like really cruel in how they talk to themselves. They have anxiety, feel depressed and overwhelmed, all the while their self talk is telling them ”I’m not good enough, I’m a failure, I’m worthless, I’m not loveable, I cannot trust anyone, I am powerless, I’m not in control.” How emotionally exhausting! We’ve realized that people want to get out of that place, they just don’t know how. They feel lost, alone, and without hope. Mental health & recurring toxic relationships can feel like an uphill battle, but you are not alone in this, that’s where we come in! We offer specific steps, practical tools, strategies, and insights that will help you to overcome these ongoing battles and help you win the war! There is hope, and there certainly is healing! Welcome to the Mrs. Therapy podcast! In this episode, we continue our series on negative beliefs and cognitions, particularly how they relate to EMDR therapy. If you're new here, EMDR is a highly effective trauma treatment that helps reprogram the brain to let go of negative beliefs. We're diving deeper into these beliefs, exploring their origins and impacts on our current lives.
In the last episode, we discussed beliefs such as "I don't deserve love" and "I'm worthless." Today, we examine "I am not good enough," tracing its roots to high parental expectations and societal pressures. We also explore how it manifests as perfectionism and procrastination, affecting various aspects of life including work and relationships.
Next, we tackle the belief "I deserve only bad things," often stemming from abusive relationships or harsh parenting. This belief can lead to learned helplessness and self-sabotaging behaviors, making it difficult to accept positive experiences.
We also discuss "I am permanently damaged," a belief arising from traumatic events or long-term mental health struggles. This can result in hopelessness and a reluctance to seek help, believing that recovery is impossible.
Finally, we explore "I am ugly or my body is hateful," frequently rooted in body shaming or physical trauma. This belief can lead to cosmetic surgery addiction, eating disorders, or social withdrawal.
Join us as we delve into these beliefs, offering examples and insights to help you identify and challenge them in your own life. Stay tuned for more episodes where we'll cover additional categories of negative beliefs, including feelings of safety, control, and choice. Have a great day and remember, your mind is a powerful thing.

Segment 1: Understanding the Brain's Response to Trauma
Brain Anatomy and Trauma: We begin by identifying the key areas of the brain involved in the trauma response—namely, the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex. Discover how these structures collaborate to process emotions, store memories, and make decisions, and why their function is critical in the context of trauma.
Neurological Responses: Learn about the immediate reactions of the brain to traumatic events, including the fight, flight, or freeze responses initiated by the amygdala. We will also discuss the role of neurotransmitters and hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, which flood the body during stressful situations, preparing it to face perceived threats.
Segment 2: Long-Term Neurological Effects of Trauma
Structural Changes: Delve into the long-term effects of trauma on the brain, focusing on how prolonged exposure to stress hormones can lead to significant changes, such as the shrinking of the hippocampus and the hyperactivity of the amygdala. Understand how these structural alterations can disrupt normal brain function, affecting memory and emotional regulation.
Functional Implications: Explore how the physical changes in brain structures manifest in daily life, including challenges with emotional management, persistent anxiety, and memory issues. We'll also introduce the concept of neural plasticity, which explains the brain's ability to adapt and reshape itself in response to traumatic experiences, both positively and negatively.
Segment 3: The Impact on Mental Health
Link to Mental Health Disorders: Examine how the changes brought on by trauma are linked to specific mental health conditions, such as PTSD, anxiety disorders, and depression. Discuss the symptoms and manifestations of these disorders in the context of the neurological impacts described, providing a clearer picture of how trauma embeds itself within the psyche.
Join us in this enlightening exploration as we unravel the complexities of the brain under trauma and share hopeful insights into the paths towards healing. Whether you're a mental health professional, someone affected by trauma, or simply interested in the power of the human brain, this episode promises to enrich your understanding and offer valuable strategies for recovery and resilience.
