We’re licensed marriage and family therapists and trauma experts with over 30 years of combined experience. We’ve seen time and time again how people have tried to will themselves to be happy, muscle through it, and have ended up even worse off than when they began. We’ve noticed that people have experienced deep pain, whether it’s others who have hurt them or situations and the world just beating them down, and often they have turned that into an internal dialogue where they are mean...like really cruel in how they talk to themselves. They have anxiety, feel depressed and overwhelmed, all the while their self talk is telling them ”I’m not good enough, I’m a failure, I’m worthless, I’m not loveable, I cannot trust anyone, I am powerless, I’m not in control.” How emotionally exhausting! We’ve realized that people want to get out of that place, they just don’t know how. They feel lost, alone, and without hope. Mental health & recurring toxic relationships can feel like an uphill battle, but you are not alone in this, that’s where we come in! In our previous episode we talked about trauma and how it can negatively affect you. In this episode we talk about how EMDR can help you resolve trauma. We will introduce you to EMDR which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. We talk about the fundamentals of this technique and how it can help you with things such as PTSD, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and negative thoughts and beliefs, as well as increase your ability to experience happiness and joy.
We discuss the 8 Phases of EMDR:
1. History & Treatment Plan: Discuss comprehensive history and develop a treatment plan with attention to traumatic events to reprocess. Discussing EMDR target memories and decide which to start with.
2. Preparation: Explanation of EMDR process & set expectations as well as address questions and concerns. Prepare and practice coping techniques available to help manage emotional disturbance that may arise.
3. Assessment: Identify the chosen target memory to be reprocessed including image, negative cognitions/beliefs, emotions, level of disturbance, and body sensations tied to the target memory.
4. Desensitization: Use Bilateral Stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or other dual attention BLS) while client thinks about the traumatic event until distress level reaches 0, which results in new thoughts and feelings about the target.
5. Installation: Installing and strengthening the positive cognition/belief that they want to associate with the target event until the positive cognition/belief feels completely true.
6. Body Scan: Checking for residual somatic symptoms and processing any lingering disturbance from the body.
7. Closure: Using relaxation techniques to return to a state of calm.
8. Reevaluation: Checking on the target at the next session to be sure the distress has reduced and the positive cognition remains strong. Future targets and treatment are discussed and determined.

If you don't think trauma has affected your life, listen to this episode and see if it could be disrupting you more than you even realize. In today's episode we'll discuss what trauma is and how trauma affects our brain. We'll also talk about how "disturbing events", although it may not be clinically diagnosed as PTSD or not normally labeled as trauma, could be stored in our body and affecting you in the same way trauma does.
