We’re licensed marriage and family therapists and trauma experts with over 30 years of combined experience. We’ve seen time and time again how people have tried to will themselves to be happy, muscle through it, and have ended up even worse off than when they began. We’ve noticed that people have experienced deep pain, whether it’s others who have hurt them or situations and the world just beating them down, and often they have turned that into an internal dialogue where they are mean...like really cruel in how they talk to themselves. They have anxiety, feel depressed and overwhelmed, all the while their self talk is telling them ”I’m not good enough, I’m a failure, I’m worthless, I’m not loveable, I cannot trust anyone, I am powerless, I’m not in control.” How emotionally exhausting! We’ve realized that people want to get out of that place, they just don’t know how. They feel lost, alone, and without hope. Mental health & recurring toxic relationships can feel like an uphill battle, but you are not alone in this, that’s where we come in! In our last episode, we discussed how trauma can impact our interactions with our spouse, making it harder to connect and communicate effectively. But today, we're shifting the focus to the solutions. We'll be discussing the practical tools and techniques that can help us overcome the barriers that trauma creates in relationships.
First, we'll talk about the importance of validating experiences, both our own and our partners'. When we feel heard and understood, it can help us feel more connected and build trust in our relationships.
Next, we'll dive into the benefits of building self-awareness, which can help us better understand our own emotions and reactions, as well as those of our partner.
We'll also explore grounding techniques, which can help us stay present in the moment and manage overwhelming emotions when triggered by past traumas.
Central nervous system compression(hugs) is another technique that can help calm our nervous system and reduce the physical symptoms of anxiety or trauma.
Lastly, we'll discuss EMDR,  to help process traumatic memories  and remove barriers to connecting.

Today, we're tackling a tough topic: trauma and its impact on our relationships with our partners. Trauma can have a profound effect on our thought processes, making us hyper-vigilant, causing us to feel numb, and making us avoid certain situations or people. All of these responses can create barriers to connecting with our spouse and leave us feeling isolated.
But trauma doesn't just affect our thoughts; it can also deepen our emotional reactions, making us more reactive and less able to control our responses. This can lead to conflicts with our partners, as we struggle to communicate our feelings and needs effectively.
On this episode, we'll be exploring the ways in which trauma affects our interactions with our spouse to deepen our understanding of ourselves and partners.

Don’t say that! Today's podcast is all about not saying things because it throws fuel on the fire. We want to help calm things down by removing these 4 don’ts. First on the list is "Whatever." This seemingly harmless word can actually be a powerful weapon in a marriage, because it communicates a lack of interest and respect for your partner's feelings. Instead of brushing off your spouse's concerns with a dismissive "whatever," try to listen and understand where they're coming from.
Next up is "Shut up." This phrase is a direct attack on your partner's ability to express themselves, and can quickly escalate a disagreement into a full-blown argument. Instead, try to stay calm and communicate your own feelings without resorting to name-calling or insults.
"You're crazy" is another phrase to avoid at all costs. Not only does it invalidate your partner's perspective, it can also make them feel like their emotions are not valid. Instead of dismissing your spouse's feelings as "crazy," try to validate their perspective and work together to find a solution that works for both of you.
Last but not least, "Divorce" is a word that should never be thrown around lightly in a marriage. Even if you're feeling frustrated or overwhelmed, threatening divorce can damage the foundation of trust and commitment that your marriage is built on. Instead, try to work through your issues together and seek counseling or other forms of support if necessary.
Remember, a healthy marriage requires open communication, mutual respect, and a willingness to work through challenges together. By avoiding these damaging phrases and focusing on building a strong foundation of love and trust, you can create a lasting and fulfilling partnership with your spouse.
